We had a box of poppers from Kaleb's birthday/4th of July from last year. We got them down from the cupboards so the kids could play with them. My mom left them on the dryer for the kids to get to, but there were also two boxes of sparklers. Kleyn had asked if he could play with the sparklers and after being told no, took them out anyway. He found an almost empty (but not quite) lighter on our grill went behind the shop to light them. After he was all done with the sparklers the day went on and no one even knew he had taken them. That afternoon he decided that the grass in our pasture was a little bit too long. He started out with one lighter, but then his friend wanted to play too, so they went and found another one. He said that he was just setting one blade on fire at a time, but when he tried to blow it out, it wouldn't go out. He figured that it would burn to the driveway and then stop, but it didn't go quite the way he thought it would. When he tried to get the hose it was stuck under a car's tire. The fire kept spreading so the boys went and got the dads from the shop.
Luckily, there was only damage about the length of the front driveway and nobody got hurt. It was really hard for Kleyn to tell me what had happened, but after hearing the whole story I was a little bit more calm. We walked around the whole property and talked about all of the people he would have affected if the fire had gotten any bigger. When we talked about how the house could have caught on fire and how his little sisters were in there, he started crying. We're trying to help him understand consequences and I think this little incidence really helped in that aspect. He was telling me that when he was playing with the sparklers he kept inching back farther behind the shop so nobody could see him. We talked about how he shouldn't be doing something if he feels like he needs to hide it.
I was pretty upset when they first told me the pasture was on fire, but I think it turned out to be a good learning experience for both of us. I know he's just getting older and more curious. There are just some things you have to go through when you have boys kids.
